Do you often wonder how the idea of calling cards was even invented? Was there a fabulous story behind the beginnings of these now highly used cards? Most of us don’t stop to think about the beginnings of products that we use on a constant basis. But it is nice to look closer at the evolution of the calling card and understand the roots behind its invention.
It all started in 1975 with a basic idea to offer people a way to pay for calls when they did not have the funds. In 1976 there was a huge coin shortage in Italy that really set off the use of calling cards. The calling card did not official appear in the United States until 1987 when people started using the cards for convenience when they were on public telephones. The World Telecom Group was the business force behind the early calling cards.
The calling card business was growing faster than anyone had ever imagined. People were making huge amounts of money just by investing in companies that provided calling cards to the world. The novel idea of selling a card to pay for your phone calls was finally beginning to pay off. As the 1980s and 1990s came around the calling card business was booming.
World Telecom Group was the dominating player with the phone card introduction to the US public in 1987. In 1990 New York’s Regional Bell Operating Company launched a calling card campaign with the first non magnetic based phone cards used by dialing an access number and a PIN number to terminate calls.
The calling card became a full telecommunication business playing field by 1992 with all major companies releasing their own brand of calling card. The companies continued to market their long distance services as they were more profitable and easier than trying to convince the public to switch to a new, less convenient service; however, sales for the Plastic Wonders grew to about twelve million industry wide with no ceiling potential projected.
The consumers’ view of the calling card was service “To Go” and at a discounted rate offered by the local long distance carriers. Unlike some of the long distant plans by the local carrier that had different rates for different times, a calling card had a consistent flat rate and could be used from any phone to any phone continental US. By buying the pre paid phone cards, one knew exactly their long distant consumption versus the “hold your breath while you opened the bill” of the traditional long distance service. A Phone card as well offered convenience of not intruding on financial long distance budget of others by using their phone to make calls.
In 2001 the industry revolutionized its self again. The first prepaid mobile phone became available. After the minutes were used up, the phone could either be recharged or discarded and a new one purchased. A prepaid cell phone has all the convenience of a phone card, without the hassle of trying to find a phone to use. Prepaid wireless phones work identical to contract phones in terms of service quality and portability. Like the calling card market, analysts are predicting the prepaid mobile phone market to increase exponentially.
The calling card market was quickly becoming a fast past business. More and more businesses were beginning to offer cards and it was easier and easier for people to find a card that offered a low rate. Many people purchased calling cards instead of even bothering to get long distance on their phones at home.
Sales have skyrocketed to the millions since the first release on prepaid phones. Last September, 2005, IDT launched a new brand of prepaid cell phones targeted at the Latino and Hispanic population.
Now you can get calling cards at almost every convenience store and shopping center. You can find great deals and huge discounts. It is also possible to get calling card numbers through the Internet. You don’t get a physical card, but you pay for the number of minutes that you need and get a specialized pin number.
Before purchasing a calling card you should do a little research on the company and make sure they offer a good customer service department and that they do not have any complaints with the local better business bureau. There are tons of fly by night companies that pop up just to sell calling cards then quickly fall out of sight. Save yourself the headache by doing your research up front.

Few technological wonders have made life and communication easier than the cell phone. So long as one is within a good calling range, you can contact anybody, anytime, while traveling. Having a cell phone is especially handy in emergencies, should your car break down or should you get lost in an unfamiliar place. People without cell phones have the convenience of using pre-paid calling cards, so as not to worry about long distance phone bills. Just enter a passcode and talking to anybody you wish.
Due to their ease of use, such items have become the target of thieves.
Phone Card Fraud
While one might not think there is much benefit to stealing a simple phone card, people are finding a way to make money from stolen authorization codes. Whether you are using a card for which there is a monthly bill or a pre-paid card, once a thief has the pass code he can make calls or engage in illegal “call-sell” operations, selling long distance time to others and pocketing the profits.
How does a thief obtain an authorization code? Think about the last time you used a phone in a public place. You might have been at the airport, bus station, or your hotel. Maybe you used a pay phone or your cell, and maybe you didn’t notice the possibility that you were being watched. Thieves are becoming craftier in their surveillance skills; if one doesn’t linger around the pay phone, pretending to wait to use it, one just might be watching you with binoculars or a zoom lens, taking note of the numbers you punch into the phone. You probably wouldn’t know until the end of the month, if you are using a billed card, and find a list of calls you didn’t make.
Always be alert when making a phone call in public. Shield the phone’s keypad from sight, and keep any calling cards close. Better yet, if you can memorize your authorization code, do so. If you have to speak your code into the phone, keep your voice low and out of others’ earshot. If you have a cell phone, program any code numbers into your speed dialing system.
Phone Travel Scams
It’s early in the morning, and you’re snoozing in your hotel bed when the phone rings. The clerk at the front desk claims there is an authorization problem with your credit cards, perhaps their number is wrong. Could you give him your credit card number for confirmation? Without thinking, you do and go back to sleep, annoyed by this inconvenience on the hotel’s part.
What you might not realize is that you could be further inconvenienced by a whopping credit card bill.
We are hearing more and more about this particular scam targeted at travelers. A room is picked at random and the traveler tricked into surrendering valuable information, allowing the thief control of your identity. Assuming you spend minimal time dealing with hotel staff, you aren’t going to know the voice of the day clerk, so you don’t think much of it. It’s an easy trap, but it can be avoided. Never volunteer any personal information over the phone while away - no name, credit card numbers, anything. If you feel the call is suspicious, hang up immediately and go down to the front desk to confirm if any calls were made by them to your room. Always best to be safe.
Cell Phone Safety
As cell phones get smaller and smaller with the new technology, it’s a wonder we don’t lose them more often! Yet, it still happens, and it is important to immediately report a lost or stolen phone to your service carrier as soon as possible to avoid incurring fraudulant charges. With travelers, too, came the problem of cell phone “cloning” fraud - this occurs when a thief gets a hold of a specific cell phone’s signal and duplicates it into another phone. The thief’s phone is then recognized as your phone, allowing the thief to make illegals calls on your bill. As the major wireless companies are taking counteractive measures against this type of theft, cloning fraud should not be the problem it used to be; nonetheless, it is always suggested to consult with your wireless company about fraud.
Vigilance and proper use of your phone and phone cards can prevent theft while away from home.

The history of phone cards extends back into the 1970s. To avoid vandalism and to counteract a shortage of coins in Europe, phone companies produced the prepaid phone cards. But as with any new product, there were technical problems. Since they were so thin, the first cards often got stuck in the pay phones. This problem was soon solved.
From Europe, the prepaid phone cards spread to other parts of the world, and over the years further improvements have been made, and lots of new features have been added to cards. The phone cards further improved when prepaid phone cards, and more importantly, virtual cards that are sold over the Internet were introduced, during the 2000s. These cards and Internet services were instantly recognized for their value, and become popular as people working all over the world put the immigrant prepaid phone cards to use.
There are several different types of phone cards for immigrants to use.
The prepaid calling card is the most familiar of the lot. You buy the card with a fixed amount on it. It is either based in minutes for nationwide calls or dollars for international calls because of the difference of the rate per minute for different destinations.
The complete opposite of the prepaid calling card is the postpaid calling card wherein you receive a monthly bill for your calls each month. However, these accounts often require a deposit or established credit before they can be opened.
Some phone cards can also be rechargeable. You only have to go to the retailer where you bought the card. This is where there is a great advantage to Internet Virtual cards. If you used the Internet to buy your card, you simply have to return to the website to recharge. Many firms, such as Pingo, even offer an automatic recharge option.. You can pay for the recharge through credit card, cash, personal check, or money order.
Another type of phone card bought over the Internet is the instant PIN. You receive the information about the card, its PIN number, access numbers, and even technical support through your email.
The type of Immigrant prepaid phone cards best suited for international calling is the international phone card. It can be utilized anywhere from the United States, and you can call anywhere in the world. If you are in another country, just dial the access number of the country, PIN number the destination number. Then, you are good to go.
With all these different types of phone cards to choose from, it is important to know these basic rules.
First, know what your needs are before you buy one. What country you wish to call, how long will the call be, will you call again or call only once, business or personal use, or rechargeable or one-time only phone cards must be taken into account. You also have to take into account the connection quality to your destination.
Second, after you have recognized your needs, it is imperative that you read the information in the phone card before you buy it. Know the fees, minute rounding and access numbers.
Third, after you have gathered enough information, make your selection. As there are many brand names to choose from, it is also wise to know that branded phone cards are more expensive. If you are an immigrant, immigrant prepaid phone cards have a much lower cost if you purchase it through smaller carriers because of their lower rates.
Fourth, it is also helpful if you know of someone who can provide a good word about an immigrant prepaid phone card before you go and buy one.

When you’re looking for long distance phone plans there are many different choices and choosing the best option can be daunting at times. In this article we will talk about the different options you might have when looking for long distance plans and some of the pros and cons of each option.
One of the most common types of long distance phone plans is traditional switched long distance. This type of service requires you to have local phone service and choose a long distance carrier. Then you must go through a sign up and verification process to begin using the service. Then, you have 10 10 long distance services (dial arounds). These days, cell phones give you free long distance as part of your service. However, these calls do count against your airtime. So, be careful and make your long distance calls accordingly or during off peak times. VOIP is another great option for unlimited domestic long distance and this type of service generally has some pretty decent international long distance rates. However, by far, the best long distance rates are available through pre-paid long distance phone plans. The only catch is that you have to make sure and select a good service to avoid hidden charges and fees and there are many to choose from.
Pre-paid long distance phone plans can be used from any phone and even have many convenient features such as, pinless dialing, speed dialing, online call detail, etc. These days there are so many options as mentioned above that it can be confusing. But, based on years of research in this area, quality pre-paid long distance phone plans are generally your best bet.

Prepaid calling cards exploded in telecommunication market because of the amount expediency that they give to consumers.
Prepaid calling is all that is needed in making calls, no need to bring lots of coins just to use pay phone. And no more prepaid bills since the prepaid calling card you’re using were already paid.
One more reason why prepaid calling cards has fast growing popularity is the capacity that can give the users in order for them to regulate their calling time to save money on a monthly basis. Around Europe and Asia, prepaid calling cards are already been exploding for quite some time now. Since a user can only make specific calls corresponding to the monetary value of the prepaid calling card. Unlike in phone bill, user has no idea and just be surprise will the amounts that calls have reached. There is actually no deposits required, no credit history needed, to attain a prepaid calling card, all you have to do is pay for the card and the user can already make some calls.
The market sales of prepaid calling cards augmented from $750 million to above $3.3 billion in just 5 years. So the revenues in prepaid calling card market over the US and Canada between 1995 and 2000 has rushed forward, the PELORUS Group reported. The domestic and international components of the market at once rose at this period of time.
On the other hand, between the year 2001 and 2002, in North America the prepaid cad market decreased. The domestic prepaid calling card decreased through this phase of time. Nonetheless, the international prepaid calling cards still benefit continually with the growing revenues. The sum of the prepaid calling card revenues jumped back to over $3.2 billion by the rising popularity of the international calling cards.
The rates of international calling have been decreased in past years to bigger parts of the population. The decreased rates were made not only because of the huge competition with prepaid calling card vendors but also with the rising competition to other form of telecommunication and VoIP. But as a result to this, there been rising level f acceptance among consumers. Thus, call times has developed in excess to off set the unfavorable effect of revenue fall down because of lower rates. Even though some other sectors of the market like the domestic calling have sloped down, the net effect is larger increase in revenues.
In 2008, the volume of the international market will be over double the equivalent volume of the domestic market. A report says that in domestic prepaid calling card revenues foreseen to decrease from 2003 until 2008. In contrast with international prepaid calling card revenue which are certainly project to increase by roughly 33%, jumping to an estimation sum of $2.75 billion in 2008.
Yet, the industry of prepaid calling cards in not impermeable to problems. There is even a variety of opinions in regards to rechargeable cards. The issue here is that the retailers do not concur with the idea to sell the rechargeable cards since the sale is a one of a lifetime deal.
The speediest rising method of merchandising is the vending machines. Since this method provides improved security measures the retailers will surely benefit from it. And in addition to that, this method doesn’t require employee participation and only requires lesser inventory.

Prepaid phone cards, which are also called debit cards, are used to make long distance telephone calls. Phone cards are prepaid by the purchaser, usually in cash, and offer the consumer the convenience of making long distance calls, domestically or internationally, without using cash or telephone credit cards.
Calls are usually made by calling a 1-800 number and entering a Personal Identification Number (PIN) printed on the back of the phone card. Customers normally purchase phone cards with specific dollar denominations.
Prepaid phone cards have been a fast-growing business for the past decade, and from the very early beginnings, it was marked with a lot of problems, until the industry stabilized itself. At present, one can find a lot of phone card suppliers, which offer relatively similar rates.
Call Times Are Set By The Specified Carrier
Phone cards provide long distance minutes based on the specific rates set by the carrier. As calls are made, the usable minutes are automatically deducted from the card balance, which is either recorded on the card itself or on a main computer through which the calls are routed. Some cards are also re-chargeable, which allow the user to add more calling time by dialing a toll-free number or accessing a web site and using a major credit card.
Prepaid phone cards are sold in many locations like convenience stores, liquor stores, discount stores, department stores, and small markets and shops. They can also be purchased through the Internet.
How The Call Credits Are Deducted
As calls are made, the usable minutes are automatically deducted from the card balance, which is either recorded on the card itself or on a central computer through which the long distance calls are routed. Some cards are also re-chargeable, which allow the user to add more calling time by dialing a toll-free number or accessing a web site and paying with a credit card.
Why Phone Cards Offer Affordable Rates
The major aspect why cheap phone cards offer such affordable rates to call domestic or international is because the technology used is different. Service providers selling phone cards use a combination of VoIP (Voice over IP) and regular lines to get a fairly good balance between call quality and low prices.
In addition, since the cards are pre-paid, which means you pay in advance for the specified talk time, other costs reduced, like the ones for collections or debt retrieval.
Verify Phone Card Information On The Packaging
Consumers should find important phone card information on the card itself or on its packaging: Each phone card should have a toll-free customer service number. If the card has an expiration date, it should be noted and clearly seen. An explanation of the rate for each minute of use should be included.
Many prepaid calls also round up the duration of each call to the nearest minute or to another increment of time. There may also be a bunch of hidden costs and charges, and these should be noted. For example, some cards will automatically deduct time from the card every week or month even if you do not make any calls.

Once you decide that a Hosted PBX system is the best solution for your business, the next critical step is to select a provider.
Here are four critical attributes you should look for in a provider:
1.) Business Hosted PBX Should be Their Core Business - Many Hosted PBX providers sell to both the residential market and the business market. Many of today’s Hosted PBX providers offer both residential and business service. It is no secret that some companies are losing large sums of money in that market. If you want to see for yourself, then take a look at the annual reports of a few public companies providing residential VOIP service.
2.) Experience and Track Record - Let’s face it, for most companies VoIP is a relatively new technology. Every day new companies emerge with announcements that they have decided to offer Hosted PBX service. It takes time and hands-on experience to perfect solid, quality-assured business processes for VOIP Hosted PBX engineering, installation, software management, traffic management, network management, and trouble-shooting. At the same time that these processes are being perfected, technical resources must also acquire the skills and experience to deliver quality service to the business market.
3.) Network Management - A recent survey conducted by Emprix revealed that more than one third of all VoIP service providers are unable to recognize they have a service quality problem until a customer complaint is received. Before selecting a provider for your VoIP Hosted PBX service make sure they are equipped with the proper Network Management System (NMS) for their VoIP deployments, one that allows their Network Operations and Field Technicians to identify and troubleshoot problems without relying upon a complaint from you to trigger an action on their part. Your Hosted PBX provider should have the capability to proactively monitor detailed call quality statistics including MOS, jitter, latency, and other measurements. State-of-the-Art network monitoring systems have advanced diagnostics linked to an online knowledgebase that automatically provide network technicians with troubleshooting tips. This capability dramatically reduces the effort and time required to identify the root cause of poor quality calls, and more importantly it reduces the time that your business is affected by the trouble.
4.) End-to-End Service Responsibility - When considering a company to be your Hosted PBX provider, ask them one simple question: “Where exactly does your service responsibility begin and end?” Most Hosted PBX providers will tell you they provide end-to-end service, but what they really mean is that their responsibility ends at the demarcation point of your building where their service terminates and your inside wiring takes over.
Your life and business will be much better off with a true end-to-end IP provider. That means you’ll have single-vendor accountability - from the cabling in the walls to the phones on your desk and the ongoing service and support you need. No finger pointing between vendors with you in the middle.
If you select a VOIP Hosted PBX provider with those four key attributes, your business risk will be minimized and you can sleep much easier at night.

For years I have been a frequent calling card user for my long distance calls. What I like the most about them is that they save me money, I don’t have to switch carrier and I get a high quality connection for my calls. To me these are reasons good as any that you too should switch to calling cards for all your long distance phone calls.
With today’s technology, it’s extremely easy to find the best rates for calls all over the world and these long distance and domestic calling cards come with low rates and high quality connection. Many people have found that the competition in the calling card markets is so fierce that it pays to use the card even exclusively for any long distance calls, including from their own homes. And as compared to the standard cards that are usually available from your telephone company, or come with your long distance service, prepaid calling cards are in most cases cheaper.
The number one benefit that I enjoy about calling cards is that they can be used with ease either from a public telephone or from a personal phone to access long-distance and other phone services. When you use phone cards you can also save a huge amount of money on your long distance bill every month as compared to using your regular carrier.
Other benefits you can enjoy when using calling cards are:
• Saving money on all your long distance calls starting today.
• The cheap online phone cards providers have the lowest long distance rates of calls.
• Calling cards allow you to pay for your long distance calls in advance.
• Immediate activation of your account, without the problems of switching long distance phone companies.
• Some companies offer you free long distance minutes in the form of a bonus with each purchase and every recharge.
• No need switching to new long distance or wireless providers.
When looking for the card that will give you the largest savings and most minutes you will find many dedicated companies online that can fulfill your needs and give you a crisp and clear connection at the same time. You’ll be surprised to learn that so many of these companies can offer you phone cards with high quality in the connection than long distance providers can offer. Calling cards is also the perfect solution for those who don’t want to change their carrier.
