Choosing A Student Credit Card
March 12th, 2008 by adminChoosing and Qualifying For A Student Credit Card
When shopping for a college credit card, there are several credit factors to take into consideration. Inquire about the APR, annual or monthly fees, late payment fees, over the limit fees, and any other miscellaneous fees. Take all the fees and APR into consideration before you apply for a credit card.
Once you have selected a student credit card to apply for, you still have to qualify. In general, you must be at least 18 years of age. Individuals who are permanent residents of Puerto Rico must be 21 or older. In addition, you must have some form of consistent source of savings or income as a way to pay your credit card bill. All lending agencies check the applicants credit history before extending an offer. Lenders for credit cards look for applicants who have repaid their debt in a timely fashion in the past. Depending on the credit card you apply for, you may or may not qualify based on your credit report.
Full-time students applying for a credit card should let the lender know of his or her in-school status. Quite often, lenders and credit card issuers will assign college students with an initial credit line that is lower as a means of building credit in a safe manner.
Your responsibility as a student credit card holder is not to be taken lightly. Nearly every step you take with your credit card in hand is recorded on your credit report. If you do not pay a bill on time, it is out there for every banker and lender to see for years to come. This is why establishing and maintaining a positive credit history is so important. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as one would hope it to be. Create a sound budget and stick to the budget plan.
